Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
